Brow Gel

What it is

Brow gel is applied with a small spoolie-style wand, similar to mascara, and brushed through the brows to hold hairs in a chosen direction. It comes clear, which adds hold without color, or tinted, which adds a light wash of color as it sets - either way, it's a finishing and setting step rather than a way to fill in shape on its own.

How it works

The formula is a flexible, film-forming liquid that coats each hair and dries into a light, bendable hold, keeping brushed-up or brushed-out hairs from falling back into their natural direction through the day. Tinted versions carry a small amount of pigment in that same film, which deposits a soft wash of color across the brow rather than the defined lines a pencil or pomade produces.

How to choose one

• Clear gel suits brows that already have enough natural hair and color, needing hold rather than more color or shape.
• Tinted gel works well on brows that need a small color boost without the more defined look of pencil or pomade - often used alone on fuller brows, or layered over pencil to set it.
• Fiber-infused formulas add tiny fibers that cling to hair, giving a subtle thickening effect useful on sparser brows that don't need full pencil or pomade coverage.

Common mistakes

• Applying too much product, which leaves brows feeling stiff or "crunchy" rather than naturally held in place.
• Brushing in an inconsistent direction, which undercuts the hold the gel is meant to provide - one clear direction, usually up and slightly out, holds best.
